HEALTH LITERACY MONTH

October is Health Literacy Month.  Health literacy is making health information easy to understand and online health systems easy to navigate (user friendly).  As a patient, when you understand the health information that is provided by your doctor, it can help to improve health outcomes when you follow proper instructions.  The Myhealthfinder website https://health.gov/myhealthfinder is a great source for health information that is provided online in a more easily understood and accessible way.

Myhealthfinder provides prevention and wellness resources that health professionals recommend to patients.  If you do not see a specific medical condition listed on the front page of the website, you can type the medical condition into the search box to be able to view the information that you are looking for.

Taking good care of yourself is extremely important to living a long, healthy life.  Make sure that you understand your body and know the signs and symptoms to alert you when something is wrong so that you can consult with your doctor as soon as possible.  When patients do not understand health related information, this affects their ability to take medication properly, and manage their health concerns effectively.  Doctors and pharmacists should create easy to read and understand patient labels and medical instructions.  It is important that you ask questions when there is anything that you do not understand about your health.  You only get one body, so you have to take the best care of yourself and get the best medical treatment that you need to live a healthy life. Schedule a doctors appointment on a regular basis to keep up with physical examinations.
