National Disability Awareness Month

Fist Bump with Coach

March is National Disabilities Awareness Month, which helps to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental and physical disabilities and addresses the barriers that those with disabilities face. Inclusion is necessary since about 15% of the world’s population live with some type of disability. It is important that we understand the relationship between the way people function in their daily life, how they participate in society, and making sure that everyone has the same opportunities and access to the necessary accommodations to navigate and thrive in every aspect of life.

Living with a disability is not the end of the world.  A disability has nothing to do with your ability to learn and thrive; it just means that you learn and thrive in a different way.  Everyone should have an equal opportunity to learn, and having access to accommodations suitable to your disability can help you live a fulfilling life.  We have to make sure to embrace inclusion, so that people do not feel inadequate.  If you have a disability and you feel isolated, join a support group to be around people who understand what it is that you are going through and invite others to attend, so that they can get an understanding as well.  Attend events that offer accommodations.  Click on this link to get access to events that people with disabilities can take advantage of.  Don't limit yourself to those events, you can attend any event that has accommodations suitable to your needs.

Love yourself and embrace your disability as an ability to thrive with the right accommodations.
