SPORTS TALK WITH COACH D

SPORTS ARE IN FULL SWING DESPITE COVID-19

NFL

Congratulations to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2021 National Football League Champions.  The Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in the final game.  Tom Brady has done it again!!

The Philadelphia Eagles made a trade on February 18, 2021 trading QB Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts for a 2021 third round pick, and a conditional 2022 second round pick.  The Eagles have a $33.8 million dead money cap charge for Wentz.

Rookie QB Jalen Hurts will be the starting QB for the Eagles 2021-2022 season.  Jalen provided the much needed spark to the team at the end of the season.  Who will be Jalen’s backup QB?

The NFL Draft will be held virtually on April 29-April 30 and May I, 2021.  The first, second and third rounds will take place April 29-April 30. The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds will take place May 1, 2021.

The Eagles have the sixth pick in the first round.  Some major prospects are Zack Wilson from BYU, Trey Lance from North Dakota State, and Justin Fields from Ohio.

The impact of Covid-19 still remains and will continue during the 2021 season.  There will be no 2021 Football Scouting Combine due to the pandemic.  Teams will host on-campus Pro days for NFL prospects.

The league will create a mini bubble around the All-Star Game.  Daily testing will be required for players, staff, and for all who attend.  The league will honor Kobe Bryant during the game.  The Skills Challenge will take place Saturday, March 6, 2021 the day before the game. The 3 Point Shooting Contest will take place Sunday, March 7, 2021 before the All-Star Game and The Dunk Contest will take place during half time.

TENNIS

Congratulations to Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka for winning The Australian Open.  Novak won the Men’s 2021 Australian Open on Sunday, February 21, 2021 defeating Danill Medvedev. Novak has won eight Australian titles.  Naomi defeated Serena Williams in the semi finals before going on to defeat Jennifer Bradley in the championship game and to win her second Australian Open Title.

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

Covid-19 had its hold on the National Hockey League (NHL).  The 2020-2021 season is like no other.  The regular season was to end on May 10, 2020 with The Stanley Cup Playoffs to begin May, 11, 2021.

Due to the pandemic and players continuously testing positive for Covid, games were pushed back and/or postponed.  The Philadelphia Flyers had to work out individually and no one was to report to training facilities. The Flyers endured a seven day shut down and had to postpone four games.

The Flyers returned to the ice on Tuesday, February, 16, 2021 with 16 players.  The team lost to the Rangers and The Bruins upon their return to play.

BOXING

Canelo Alvarez defeated Anvi Yildirim in the third round of a title fight on February 27th.  The fight was stopped by Yildirim's team before the start of 4th round.  It looked as if Yildirim just wanted the money, because he spent most of his time blocking his face versus throwing punches.  He was knocked down by Alvarez in round 3, but got up at the bell in the end of round 3.  Congrats to Canelo!

This month, sports arenas will be open to the public once again, with limited capacity.  Fans are now permitted to attend games in person.  Contact your local arena for more details.

** WISHING TIGER WOODS A SPEEDY RECOVERY AND RETURN!!

On Tuesday, February 23, 2021, Tiger Woods was in a serious car accident where his car went off the road hit a tree and rolled over several times in Southern California. First responders had to use the Jaws of Life to free Tiger.  Tiger suffered comminuted open fractures to both the upper and lower portions of his tibia and fibula of his right leg, as well as damage to the  muscles, soft tissue and ankle bones .  Tiger underwent several hours of operation,  including the placement of rods & pins to stabilize his leg.  Tiger was awake and responsive following the surgery!!!!

Tiger has had various surgeries in the past.  Just recently he underwent back surgery and was still on the mend.

Stay tuned for more sports talk with Coach D, next month.
