Black History Month

February is Black History Month

Black History Month is a celebration of African American culture and accomplishments, and contributions to history.  In1926, Carter G. Woodson founded the first Negro History Week. This is said to be in February to coincide with President Abraham Lincoln’s and Fredrick Douglass’s birthdays; both were symbols of freedom. It wasn’t until 1976 that President Gerald Ford extended the observation to a full month.

Black History Month honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans today.

We celebrate it through music, culture, food, dance, clothing, and achievements.  Let us take pride in how far we have come, and how far we will continue to thrive.  Love your sisters and your brothers, so that we can stop killing each other, and instead embrace and love on each other as God loves us.  Happy Black History Month!
