HEALTHY LUNG MONTH

October is National Healthy Lung Month.

Lung health is important, because our lungs guide breathing.  We need to breathe to live.

In October we recognize National Healthy Lung Month to increase awareness and education around this very important topic.  There are several things you can start doing today to take care of your lungs.  They are:

Try to stay healthy.
To avoid illness that can result in a serious infection, wash your hands regularly, avoid crowds and social distance, wear a mask, and get your flu shot.  Get fully vaccinated.

Exercise regularly.
Physical exercise helps to make your muscles and lungs stronger. All adults should aim to be moderately active for a total of 30 minutes a day for five days a week.

If you are a smoker, Quit smoking.
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths in both men and women in the United States, and 85 percent of the lung cancer deaths are due to tobacco use.

The healthcare provider, Inspira Health, provides free individualized smoking cessation programs with certified tobacco treatment specialists providing one-on-one counseling, in person or over the phone, and group counseling through their Inspira Quit Center.  You can find out more on their website.

Get screened.
Screening for lung cancer using low-dose CT scans can lower the chance of dying from lung cancer by 20 percent, according to the National Lung Cancer Screening Trial.

You should be screened for lung cancer if you are between the ages of 55 and 77, asymptomatic (no signs or symptoms of lung cancer), have a tobacco smoking history, or are a current smoker or have quit smoking within the last 15 years.

There are all types of things that can affect your lungs and cause serious diseases.  Your lungs are very important. They are a part of the respiratory system.  Your lungs bring fresh oxygen into your body. They remove the carbon dioxide and other waste gases that your body's doesn't need.  Watch the YouTube video below to see how the lungs function.
