We Celebrate National Military Appreciation Month

Honoring Service, Sacrifice, and Patriotism

Each May, the United States observes National Military Appreciation Month, a time set aside to recognize and honor the men and women who serve or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. This month-long tribute was officially designated by Congress in 1999, providing Americans a dedicated opportunity to reflect on the value of military service and express gratitude to those who protect the nation’s freedoms.

A Month of Meaningful Dates

May was chosen because it includes several key dates in military history:

  • Loyalty Day (May 1): Celebrates American heritage and reaffirms loyalty to the United States.

  • VE Day (May 8): Marks the end of World War II in Europe.

  • Military Spouse Appreciation Day (second Friday of May): Recognizes the strength and support of military spouses.

  • Armed Forces Day (third Saturday of May): Honors those currently serving in the military.

  • Memorial Day (last Monday of May): Pays tribute to those who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Each of these observances highlights a different aspect of military life—from active duty members and veterans to the families who support them and the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Celebrating National Military Appreciation Month fosters awareness and understanding of the sacrifices made by service members and their families. It reminds civilians of the cost of freedom and encourages communities to show support through acts of kindness, education, and remembrance. Whether it's flying the American flag, attending local ceremonies, or simply thanking a veteran, the gestures (big or small) help bridge the civilian-military divide.

National Military Appreciation Month is not just about remembering the past, it's about actively appreciating the present and committing to the future. It’s a chance for all Americans to stand united in respect and gratitude for those who dedicate their lives to defending our country.

Love, not War.

Happy Memorial Day!  Thank you for your selfless service.
