OBTAINING YOUR
CREDIT REPORT

It is important to keep up with the information that is reported on your credit report.  You want to make sure that you review your credit report to make sure that you dispute any errors.  You also want to make sure that you request to have data removed that is past the statute of limitations required by your state. In PA, the statute of limitations is seven years.  If there is any data on your credit report that is over seven years old, you can write to the credit reporting agency asking that they remove it from your credit report.  The last date that you communicate with the debt collector, determines the date that will be used to determine when the data can be removed from your credit report.

Each year, by law, you can request a free copy of your credit report from all three credit reporting agencies by sending a letter.  When you apply for a credit card or loan and want to know what information was used to determine your creditworthiness, you can request a copy of your credit report.  To obtain a copy of your credit report from all three credit bureaus you can write to:

Equifax, PO Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241

Experian, PO Box 2104, Allen, TX 75013-0949

TransUnion, PO Box 1000, Chester, PA 19022

Within each year, you are entitled to one free credit report from each credit bureau.  You can also request and print your Credit Report for free, every twelve months, from all three Credit Bureaus online as well at AnnualCreditReport.com.  It is good to request one from each of them, because sometimes some of the data is different for each reporting agency.  If you notice and errors, you can visit the credit bureau website to dispute the error.  This is extremely important when you are in the process of buying a home.
