GOOD HEALTH & WELLNESS

NATIONAL WELLNESS MONTH

Wellness in the mountains

National Wellness Month is celebrated every August in the United States to promote the importance of self-care, mental health, and overall well-being. It’s a time to raise awareness about the holistic approach to health, which includes physical, emotional, and mental wellness, and encourages people to take time for themselves to reset, recharge, renew, and re-focus on personal health.

Wellness isn’t just about physical fitness; it’s about creating a balance between your mind, body, and spirit.  Mental health is often overlooked in wellness discussions. Celebrating National Wellness Month can help reduce the stigma around mental health issues, encourage open conversations, and raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being. It’s a reminder to prioritize stress management, mindfulness, and seeking professional support when needed.

Many of us are caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, often neglecting our own self-care.  Self-care is not selfish.  It is a time for you to relax, reflect, and prioritize self-care practices like journaling, meditation, yoga, or just unplugging from technology.  It is also a great opportunity to evaluate and implement new healthy habits. Whether it’s committing to exercise more, drinking more water, eating healthier, or improving sleep habits.

Wellness isn’t just about individual health; it’s also about building a sense of community. Many wellness-related events, challenges, or group activities take place in August, encouraging individuals to support each other in their wellness journeys.

Many people experience burnout from work, relationships, or day-to-day life.  Taking breaks, setting boundaries, and learning to say "no" can help preserve long-term health and happiness.
By celebrating wellness, people are empowered to take control of their health.   A few things that you can do are:

  • Practice Self-Care: Dedicate time each day to do something that rejuvenates you, whether it’s a bubble bath, read a good book, or take a walk in the park.

  • Exercise: Try out new fitness routines or outdoor activities. You don’t have to go to a gym; yoga, hiking, or dancing at home are great options.

  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Spend time each day meditating or practicing mindfulness to reduce stress and increase emotional well-being.

  • Healthy Eating: Experiment with healthier recipes or incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and whole foods into your meals.

  • Sleep: Work on improving your sleep hygiene. Set a bedtime routine, reduce screen time before bed, and create a restful environment for a deeper sleep.

  • Connect with Others: Engage in wellness challenges with friends, family, or online communities to build a support system.

  • Learn: Educate yourself on areas of wellness that interest you, such as stress management techniques, fitness tips, or mental health and wellness practices.
